The information on this site was gathered from many sources . I must specially mention Free BMD which is a first call for births, marriages and deaths and costs you nothing, a great thank you to their wonderful voluntary transcribers. I  recommend also the Genealogist which is a pay by view site for census information, which is complete to1901  for every county and every census, more transcriptions are being added all the time; A must visit for census information. I hope I have named all those people who have helped me so much. Any inaccuracies and omissions are completely down to me, and any one who has better and more accurate information regarding these ancestors of mine. Please E-mail me.

NOTE: After opening a chart the sizing may not be perfect.  To improve the view, put the mouse pointer over a box, an icon will appear in the bottom right hand corner. Move the pointer to the icon and click, and all should be clear.

All italics in green  are sources of information, red italics is a guess or surmise.. The main players in these potted histories are as follows:-

THE BRIGGS.
A dyeing family, living in Greenwich but by the 1860's had spread their wings to Paddington/Kensington, and then had moved by 1881 to South London. A plea for help to anyone who has knowledge of the dyeing industry in this period, please tell me something about it! Was it Mrs. Briggs with a washing bowl dyeing Mrs. Brown's curtains or a factory dyeing yarn/cloth as a raw material? Robert Briggs living in Clapham married a seamstress in Colchester in 1884, long range romance! For a Briggs tree click here.

THE CRISPINS.
A mid-Devon family, (Zeal Monachorum) John Crispin in 1862 was shown on his son's birth certificate as a general labourer, but by 1881 had progressed to casterator (vet). I wonder what sort of vets we had in 1881! One of his sons Walter (a g-grandfather of mine) moved to London and became a successful builder (apparently with connections to the Chinese community), but whether this was through his marriage into the Castle dynasty or his own efforts, who knows. The CASTLE's also originated in Devon. To View a Family Tree Chart of the Crispins please click here.

THE DOWDINGS.
The beginning of the Dowdings was in Greenwich. They were part of the dyeing fraternity but at the end of his career the William Dowding was a coal dealer. Two of William's daughters married William John Hearne BRIGGS. Interesting times!  To view a Dowding chart click here.

THE GREENFIELDS.
The earliest researched Greenfield was a Frederick who married a RICHARDSON. Frederick was shown as a surgeon on the marriage certificateof his son. The main player in this family was Frederick William Richardson Greenfield (their son). Frederick joined the Royal Navy, and remained in the Navy all his life. Reading between the lines his wife, Harriet Springett from Essex was a mainstay of this family. The family was Essex based after the marriage. To View the Greenfield family tree, click here.

THE LAUGHTONS.
This is where my research started. My father left me some documentation and some family legends. The origins of the family were in the Orkney Islands at Kirkwall. But the first member of the family I have found was born in London around 1830. So some way yet to go to prove the origins. The story said that the original family were sailmakers but were bankrupted with the arrival of steam, not true, the Laughtons originally were smiths (tin and iron). However a Laughton married a MADDEN maiden and the Maddens were involved in sailmaking in London. Researching the family indicates the trend of the time, starting in London's East End and down the generations moving out to the leafy suburbs of Essex. For the Laughton origins Click Here.

THE MADDENS.
Thanks to Lesley Worstencroft and Lorraine Lawson, the amount of information on these families is vast. The lead member in my family is Sarah Ann Madden who married the first John General LAUGHTON. I am desperately attempting to find a Mary Ann? known to my father as Aunt Polly. More legend, a racy lady? In our family!? However I have no proof that this lady existed at all! For a Madden chart Click Here

There are many more families involved in my history and they are to be found in the directory. Many facts need to be teased out further. In the LAUGHTON dynasty the middle forename GENERAL is used through two generations. This was the forename of John Laughton's father-in-law General WADE. His father was also named General but was a  fisherman in Brightlingsea.  In the BRIGGS dynasty the middle forename Bass appears three times. Presumably a maiden name of a forebear not yet found? To avoid confusion, the ancestors with the same forenames are listed in date order and are number superscripted
