Born in 1822, whereabouts unsure as 1881 census shows place of birth as Plimspool?. He was the second husband of Harriet formerly Greeenfield nee Springett. They were married in Tendring in the last quarter of 1870. Resident at 62 Bergholt Rd. in 1881 with his son and Harriet’s children. Appears to have died before 1891 as Harriet is on the 1891 census living at the same address. William is not shown. William was a naval pensioner. Info. from 1881 & 1891 census courtesy Jo Fagg. GARVIN, Edward
Known as Ted, played trombone in orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. Suffered from Asthma and retired early.Married Winifred nee BRIGGS and finally moved to 8 Southwold Crescent great Tarpots. Ted composed a setting to the hymn tune ‘Crimond' for the metrical version of the 23rd Psalm. Possibly used at his own funeral as well. for his daughter Vera’s. GREEENFIELD, Alice (1863-1946)
Born in 1863 at Dovercourt, daughter of Frederick William Henry Richardson and Harriet nee SPRINGETT. Living at Bergholt Rd. Lexden Essex in 1881 census with her mother and stepfather William ELLIS. Alice’s occupation was shown as a dressmaker. Also at the address her siblings, William and Fred. At the address was her stepbrother Edward Ellis. Thre was also a lodger, William Betts. In the census all surnames had become Ellis, but the initial G. was inserted as a second initial, presumably for Greenfield. On Thursday December 25th Alice was married to Robert John BRIGGS at St. Paul’s church, at St. James Colchester. From 1901 (or earlier) to 1919 Alice and Robert were living at 52 Pretoria Avenue, Walthamstow. They had 4 children Dorothy Olive, Stanley, Winifred and Leslie Gordon. Alice was widowed in 1919. In 1940, Alice was living at 4, Southwold Crescent, Great Tarpots. Alice died on Saturday 14th September 1946 at 100, Palmerston Rd. 1946. GREENFIELD, Frederick William Henry Richardson (1819-1864)
Born on Monday 22nd February 1819 in Harrow of parents Frederick and Jane nee RICHARDSON. Frederick was baptised on Sunday 31st August 1823 at St James Cripplegate. He joined the Navy c1837 serving Fairy, but by the 1st October 1839, Henry was serving as an Able Seaman on H.M.S. Hastings in the Mediterranean. The ship was involved putting some men ashore at Beirut to defuse some explosives beneath a bridge.The objective was achieved under heavy musket fire. He gained 3 good service badges in his career of over 25 years in the Royal Navy. He was awarded 5 medals serving in the Crimea and Syria. Frederick was known as Henry by the Royal Navy. Frederick married Harriet SPRINGETT at St.James, Colchester on Tuesday 20th April 1852. Harriet and Frederick had 4 (known) children, Henry Richard, William, Frederick and Alice. In 1860, Frederick was serving as a quartermaster in the ship’s company of H.M.S. Pembroke, a naval block ship. Before the end of his naval service in 1864, he was shown as a cook and pensioner on H.M.S. Pembroke. Frederick retired on Thursday 17 th March 1864. Frederick died later the same year on Tuesday 20th September. Much more research needs to done, cause of death at present unknown. Frederick may have met Harriet in the house of Mary Greenfield Eagle at East Hill where Harriet was living in 1861.Who was Mary Eagle? Was she related to Frederick? GREENFIELD, Henry Richard (1819-?)
Born on Saturday 19th December 1857 in Tendring of parents Frederick William Henry and Harriet nee SPRINGETT. Henry joined the Royal Naval Hospital School at Greenwich in 1868. His father a (Royal Naval pensioner) had died in 1864. The children of deceased naval pensioners were allowed to apply for entry into the school. Henry left the college with a schoolmaster’s certificate 2nd class in 1879. He was serving on H.M.S. Cleopatra in 1881 as a naval schoolmaster. Born in Copfurd Essex about 1807 parents unknown, Greenfield is believed to be her married name. Mary was living at 53, East Hill in 1851 described as a widow. The 1851 census shows her as a cork manfacturer employing three men. Living at the same address were Harriet SPRINGETT and Harriet GENTRY. Both are shown as nieces. HIRON, Sarah Ann (1873-1953)
Sarah was born in December 1873 at 10, Ellesmore Rd. Bethnal Green. Sarah was deaf and dumb. Sarah married William MADDEN at St. Saviours Parish Church, Walthamstow on Monday 26th December 1892. In 1901 Sarah and Wiliam were living at 95, Markhouse Avenue, Walthamstow. Sarah and William had 9 children: William George, Sarah Ann, John, Ethel Susannah, Daisy, Edward, Dorothy, Arthur Richard and Gladys Louisa. Sarah died on Wednesday 18th February 1953 at Gunners Grove, Chingford, Essex. Sarah was buried at St. Marys, Walthamstow. Information from Lesley Worstencroft and 1901 census. Whilst it is known that her husband William was deaf and dumb from birth, Sarah Ann may not have been deaf and dumb all her life.

Alfred married Rosina Maud LAUGHTON in the September qtr 1901. They had two children, Ruby and Gladys Alfred ran an ironmongery/D-I-Y shop in the 40’s. John and Eliza had two children, John General and Susannah Amelia. In 1881, shown as living at 8, Commodore St. Mile End Old Town, and employment shown as blacksmith. Eliza died before 1874, as John married Elizabeth PIKE at St. Peter’s, Stepney on 28th December 1874. Elizabeth had one child Emily from another marriage. Born on Wednesday 29th March 1856 at 5, Gray St. Bromley –by Bow of parents John and Eliza nee WADE. John married Sarah Ann MADDEN at St. Annes in 1878. In 1881 he and his family were living at 18, St. Judes St. Bethnal Green. John was employed as a trimmer. During the period 1879-1889 the couple had six children: John General, Rosina Maud, Mabel Florence, Albert James, and , Major Percival. And Stanley Herbert. By 1901 the family had moved to 613, Seven Sisters Rd. Tottenham and John General was working as a tinsmith. In 1924 John was living 24, Cleveland Park Avenue, Walthamstow. John died on Friday 22nd February 1929 of pneumonia after an operation for cancer of the stomach. He died at All Souls, City of London. His employment was shown as a foreman tinsmith. In 1901, he was still living at home at 613, Seven Sisters Rd. Tottenham, his occupation shown as carpenter. He married Emily Maud nee BUCK. They lived in Lancaster Rd. Walthamstow. LAUGHTON, Major Percival (1905-1972)
Born in 1887 of parents John General and Sarah Ann nee MADDEN. Served with the YMCA in the Mediterranean in WW1. Major Percival married Louie nee NORTH in 1928 after which they lived Finchley. He joined Ed Gardner in the rag trade, buying woollen cloth from the Yorkshire Mills asnd selling it to retailers, including Marks and Spencer and Harrods. The office of this enterprise was in Golden Sq. Soho. About 1937 Major and Louie moved to Seasalter in Kent. Louie was always in poor health and the family had a housekeeper. During the war, Seasalter was a prohibited area and Major moved to stay with his brother’s Stanley family at Wendover, Bucks, whilst Louey went to Paignton. In the end ,the couple lived with the vicar in The Lee. Apparently The Lee was dominated by the Stewart-Liberty family (of Liberty’s Regent St.) Major and Stanley remained close all their lives. Major was buried on Wednesday 4 November 1959, after a successful(!!) kidney operation.Info. from Vivienne Triseliotis and Hymn sheet for Major’s funeral service.

Born in 1881 at Bethnal Green of parents John General and Sarah Ann MADDEN. Living at 18 St. Judes St. Bethnal Green. Rosina was visiting friends named FORD on the night of the 1901 census at 12 Plevna Rd. Tottenham. The census reported that Rosina was employed as a cotton weaver machinist. LAUGHTON, Stanley Herbert (1905-1972)

rn on Monday 7th October 1889 in Tottenham of parents John General and Sarah Ann nee Madden. In 1901 Stanley lived with his parents at 613, Seven Sisters Rd. Tottenham. Stanley was employed by the National Telephone Company in 1905. He was ordained in 1907. Stanley was issued a passport (see picture) to travel to France in 1914 working for the YMCA.. On Saturday 6th October 1917, Stanley married Dorothy Olive nee BRIGGS at the Lighthouse corner of Markhouse Rd. and Downfield Rd., Walthamstow. . He started as a lay preacher in 1907. Stanley was a minister all his life in the nonconformist church. Stanley and Dorothy left Whitstable , moving to Canterbury. For a period after Canterbury, the pair lived with John General1 at Cleveland Rd. In 1919, Stanley was a secretary of the YMCA, whilst living at 81, High St. Whitstable, Kent. Stanley had a serious and mysterious illness in 1924 whilst at at Howard Rd. At this period Stanley was working for Kolynos. In 1929 the family (two children Alan Clifford and Vivienne Olive) were living at 189, Howard Rd. Walthamstow, before which the family was living in Higham’s Park.. In 1930 the family were at 15 Montalt Rd. Woodford Green.Stanley had another illness in 1931. There was a takeover of Kolynos in the 30’s and Stanley left. In 1939, Stanley was working as a Sales Manager for a boxmaking Co. Wood, Rozelear and Wilkes in Willesden.. In 1946, Stanley and Dorothy moved to 100, Palmerston Rd. Buckhurst Hill. Their final residence was a bungalow at 19 Westbury Rd. Buckhurst Hill. In the 50’s Stanley joined his brother Major (qv) as a woollen agent. Stanley died on Saturday 21st December 1969 at St. Margarets Hospital Epping Hospital Epping. He was Sales manager for Kolynos. During his latter employment he was a woollen agent. He loved to go to markets and auctions In his pastoral duties he organised and ran stalls stalls for fetes and other outdoor event to raise money for church charities. This allowed Stanley to indulge his interest in ventriloquism and conjuring. Born during the 2nd Qtr 1864 at Mile End, Stepney of parents John and Eliza nee WADE. Susanna was living at home with her parents in 1881at 18, St. Judes St. Bethnal Green. In the third qtr 1887, Susanna married James George Jackson in Poplar. Info. from FBMD, 1881 Census Needs some checks, having difficulty tracing the couple in the 1901 census.
